Gov. Bob McDonnell yesterday rejected Paul Warner Powells bid for clemency, clearing the way for his execution scheduled Thursday at 9 p.m., barring any court intervention. Powell, 31, is set to die by electrocution at the Greensville Correctional Center for the Jan. 29, 1999, capital murder of Stacie Reed, 16, in her Manassas home. Powell stabbed Reed in the heart with a survival knife.

After three previous tries for appeal, Paul Powell's attorneys are appealing to Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to commute his death sentence to life without parole. Powell is set to die on March 18 after being convicted of killing 16-year-old Stacie Reed and raping her 14-year-old sister in their Manassas home in 1999.
