South Lakes High School Reviews

South Lakes High school, a school where most people in the area are afraid to attend because of its poor judgements pf people who have never set foot there. I'm a rising tenth grader attending South Lakes this fall. When I first moved to Reston, I hated it and I still do. I've left somethings behind. But this school changed me. Mentaly and phisically. The teachers are outstanding. They might be a little tough on you for not doing your home works and so and so but they're trying to make you do the best and succeed in the future. Your councelors are magnificient. They'll take sometime to listen to what you have to talk to them about, they'll listen and give you some advice. Even though the school is not in ther best conditions right now, when I first when there, It helped learn what I needed to.

South Lakes is an excellent school. The staff has been extraordinary, and the mix of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds have prepared my son for the real world. We would not choose to place our kids in any other school in Fairfax County. Our kids are happy and have succeeded in the Langston Hughes/South Lakes pyramid, and we couldn't have asked for better for them anywhere.

This school is definitely not a bad school. Contrary to the belief of many residents in the surrounding area it is actually in my opinion one of the best schools in the nation. I understand that this is a biased opinion based off of the fact my child goes to South Lakes but South Lakes definitely provides everything I expected a school to have and more. Ever since there was a change in administration the school has been amazing and once the renovations and redistricting are complete I believe it will be a top 100 school in the noation or even better

This is one of the bst high schools in the United States. There are programs for every interest. The students are diverse; many families come from overseas looking for great education, and these students are motivated. Test scores are top notch. It is not even crowded, so your child will get the attention he or she deserves. This school also looks good on college applications. A+

The IB program at South Lakes is amazing. The teachers are dedicated, hard working, and the students are excellent in those classes. The regular level classes could use some improvement with discipline and focus. However, safety has never been a 'paramount of importance' for my children here. I'm assuming that comment below might have been written by an angry Oakton parent.

The much talked about diversity factor is true with most of the fairfax county public schools not only this one! Schools are for education and safety has to be of paramount importance!

I am currently attending south lakes and I think that it is a great school. I have a friend from elementary school and I was talking with some of her friends who attend oakton and they actually said ' You go to South Lakes? Aren't you scared to go there? Most of the people we know are afraid to even go over there.' I was so suprised! I knew it had a bad rep but wow! I think that they should actually come and see what the school is like before they judge it. I think south lakes is an excelent school. People say that all the students that go there are bad and dangerous. That is not true.

South Lakes is currently under renovation and will have outstanding facilities when the renovation is complete. Principal Bruce Butler is building an excellent faculty with supportive administration. The PBS program that has been implemented to help student develop a positive school environment is outstanding and has transformed the school into a community. The taking flight mentorship program provides young student roll models. South Lakes is quickly becoming one of the best schools in the Fairfax County and the United States.

I am a parent of a rising 10th grader. I am positive that she is in a good school and will get a fantastic education. If you all notice most of the ratings are high. At any school, parents and students will get out what they put into a class. I think those with negative comments will have those comments about wherever they go. We now have a fantastic new principal who is very involved and is making this school an even greater place to go. Please note that '65 percent of of students who applied to UVA were offered admission. Average for all High schools in Fairfax County is 25 percent.' The same amt of students were admitted from Langley as from SLHS and SLHS produced 55 IB diploma candidates. (read opinion in Connection 8/14 page 12. Don't just look at SOL scores!

As the parent of 2 SLHS students and a long-time member of the community, I have been delighted by the huge improvement in SLHS over the past 5yrs. The administrators know the kids & are always out in the halls, talking with students and taking the pulse of the school. Many of the teachers have exciting credentials (for instance, we have many '2nd career' teachers who have actually practiced what they now teach) & know how to motivate kids. Communication between admin/teachers/parents is proactive - for instance, every teacher posts homework online every day & responds to email within 24hrs. And just in the past few years there has been a new emphasis on courtesy, mutual respect & personal responsibility that has made a dramatic difference in morale and discipline. The students are proud of the school's diversity & learn from it. This school is an up-and-comer!

South Lakes is a wonderful school with an undeserved negative reputation in surrounding districts. My two children have had very positive experiences at South Lakes and are very well prepared for their very bright futures.

My children have transferred from another school district within the past year. Their experience within South Lakes has been excellent. The academic, sports and community based activities are great. Prior to coming to the district, I received mixed feedback. The one common theme with the feedback is that people with children in the school have positive feedback. This is a school which challenges students and produces great people. This is a good school!

I am currently enrolled in the school and I couldn't have imagined anything better! Coming into to SLHS I heard rumors of fights, drugs, and complaints of the classrooms. So far this year I have not witnessed one fight, or seen any open drug deals in school. Sure the classrooms are small and there are no windows, but thats what the renovation is for! This is a great school and I love it.

I am a senior at South Lakes, and I've never had anything but an excellent experience at South Lakes. The diversity of the curriculum and the genuine motivation of the teachers to ensure that the classroom isn't just about textbooks and notetaking but rather about critical thinking and the development of articulate, coherent arguments for lingual, historic, and mathematical processes is something that should be valued independent of the name of an institution. I owe the brunt of my educational success to this school, and I know that my peers do as well. Parents are involved, and administrators genuinely care about the welfare of both teachers and students. A 4/10 rating just doesn't cut it for this school.

South Lakes is Amazing. I am in my third year there, and i would never want to go anywhere else. I don`t know what people are talking about when they says that there are 'obvious drug deals' and 'daily gang fights' there are no such thing. South Lakes gets a bad reputation do to the diversity when it should instead be celebrated. The teachers are wonderful, The IB program is outstanding, and the school itself is great.I love South Lakes with all my heart and wish those speaking poorly of it would learn to speak from experience instead of just what they hear. Go Seahawks!

South lakes is an great school in reston the students there have so much fun ..Even for the new freshman they have new sub school and locker i know they enjoy that every are great peoples everyone has an great time at south lakes especally sports

My oldest child graduated from SL in 1992. My youngest child will graduate in 2007. (4 children) This is a good school. You cannot ask for better diversity. Children from all backgrounds and countries provides the opportunity to learn about other cultures and to learn to get along with fellow students. Students who hope to get noticed by colleges will have a hard time because of the poor coaching and school's season records. There're many excellent student athletes at SL. Academically, it a great school.

I have one recent graduate and another child now in her Junior year, and both have loved the school for all of its dimensions. The spirit, camaraderie, parental involvement, instruction, and -- under Bruce Butler's new direction -- leadership are excellent.

This school currently under renovation will expand its boundaries after the completion of its contruction which means for an increase in the enrollment from 1,400 to 2,000. That means south herndon kids will be attending this school. Maybe finally this school will get a break from its lack in extracurricular activities, parent involvment, and MAYBE safety and security. We are in for an energized school spirit!

I'm currently a junior enrolled at South Lakes and I feel that my quality of education is outstanding, that the teachers are great, that the school is safe and that the diversity contributes the the overall atmosphere that I've come to love in my three years here. There is a small measure of gang activity and drugs, but that is the same, if not worse at other schools, even ones that are very close to South Lakes. Maybe you should COME to the school, before you make the assumption that, because there are people from different backgrounds, our school is rampant with undesireable activity.

I think south lakes high school has good teachers but the school is very dangerous it is next to many bad neighborhoods and the students are very scary and dangerous looking. safety and discipline are very low in this school.

Next year we will have a new principle. And with the renovation coming it is time for someone who understands what they are doing. Overall the teachers at SLHS are great. They are only lazy if the class is lazy otherwise they put in 100% to their students. Yes, the overall safty and discipline may be low, as a freshman or any other grade, there is no need to worry about your safty unless you give it away. However, South Lakes is a great school and I consider myself privledged to go to SLHS in Fairfax County, one of the richest, one of the best school systems, and is home of some of the best teachers in the country.

I was a graduating student in 2002. South Lakes is a wonderful school with dedicated well-educated teachers. I also felt very safe there. Parents who do not feel their students are safe should really go and visit with an open mind. Reston itself is a planned community, which means that there are big wealthy neighborhoods next to subsadized housing. The school, therefore, draws from many different backgrounds. This does not make the school less safe. It makes the school diverse. I now attend the University of Virginia and feel as prepared as any student here. Many of whom had attended Phllips Acadamy at Andover, Thomas Jefferson High School, and many other magnet public schools and leading private schools. Please don't underestimate this school.

Every one is obviously blinded by a facade. I feel sorry for the teachers because they are great but the school itself is horrible.

I was not happy at all to read someone's comment that the teachers at this school are lazy. they should perhaps talk with their child about the effort they are putting into the learning process. Some of the country's best teachers work at South Lakes High School, and this is from a student's perspective.

South Lakes is about as diverse school you will find anywhere, I liked it for that. But as far as the education you recieve go somewhere else!

South Lakes was a good school when I went. However, I have heard that it has changed a lot since I was there and that was only 5 years ago. But some of my wonderful teachers that I was lucky to have are still there. Not only are some the teachers amazing but so are a lot of the members of the staff. Really good people work at South Lakes.

I was a student at south lakes and I loved it. The diversity in the school is unique. The teachers are great and the school is run very well. I am proud to be a south lakes high school graduate.

I think this is the best school ever. my kids love it, and now that we move everything is so different. their not into school as they did when they went to SLHS. I really love how my kids learned alot and was into activities and I reget moving.

This schools security and safety is not good at all. Also my child attends this school and complained to me that he doesnt get to learn that much.
