St. Thomas More Cathedral School Reviews

Our two kids have blossomed at St. Thomas More. The teachers are constantly updating their teaching techniques and implement many innovative methods in the classroom. No wonder the school's academic program is nationally-recognized. The school has high standards and teachers give individual attention to kids to help them achieve their goals. Their work pays off because nearly all students are accepted into their first choice high school and also earn scholarships to hard to get into private high schools. The faculty is caring so they are good role models. Since the student body is very diverse, the kids learn acceptance, tolerance and respect for each other's differences and gifts. We feel very blessed that we found this school.

We have compared the academics at STM with area public schools and they are right on track or beyond.

We transitioned to the Fairfax County Schools from STM. We were advised by the public school that both our kids were behind in math and, because STM courses don't follow the SOLs, we missed some material all together. One of our kids was two grades behind in reading when we arrived in the Fairfax schools, but tested average on the standardized testing that went into the Blue Ribbon designation. I don't think you are getting what you think you are getting.

We are a new family to St. Thomas More in Sept., 2007. One of the things that attracted our family to this school was the fact that it was awarded a Blue Ribbon School by the Dep't of Education in 2006. In addition, it has a wonderfully diverse student body. Well, two months in, and we are just thrilled. Our kids love the school. The kids are challenged, yet love to go to school each day. The spiritual and moral dimension of the school set it apart. Our kids were in Arlington County schools previously, and yes, they had excellent teachers....but when it comes to the seriousness of learning, the moral and religious values that my children are taught each day - well there is no comparison. I feel as if this school is an undiscovered jewel, in terms of the staff, the caring and love that our family experiences daily.

We have attended STM for the last two years and absolutely love everything about the school. The teachers are involved with the parents and there is a open communication with them. My son really enjoys his teachers and the other children in the school.

My son is in his third year at Saint Thomas More, and I am very satisfied with the experience. The teachers are terrific, the acedimics are of a high quality, and the parents have plenty of opportunities to get involved. My son has enjoyed playing on soccer and basketball teams with his classmates, and has other options for extracurricular activities should he choose to participate. I was surprised to read the earlier poor reviews of the school and the principal. I have always been impressed with the principal's leadership and especially with her concern for student safety. Saint Thomas More is a well run school, with excellent teachers, and a superior acedemic program. It is hard to imagine that this would happen without the leadership of a good principal.

I am a parent of three kids; two of which have attended this school. Never again will I make the mistake of sending my youngest to this school as I did with his two siblings. This school has lost its ethical foundation and can no longer claim to be a school promoting moral beliefs. This year is the last year that any of my children shall attend.

In reference to the previous post, the attendant of the school who posted obviously NEEDS to further education over the same concepts particularly in spelling and grammar! I also attend the school and we do not go over the same concepts repeatedly, the rare times we do it is to our benefit because few people understood the concept. Our staff is fully accredited and our teachers have a passion for teaching that we would not find in a public school.

I think this school used to be a wonderful place. Under the current principal, we have less students and I come home almost every day complaining of the unfair teachers. My school would be a much better place under new mangement. The academic are okay, but me and most of my friends are bored in our classes. We continuly go over comcepts again and again, while the teachers claim they are supposed to do this. The extracurricular activties are pathetic, my parents have had to pay extra money to other things to keep me busy during the year. Parental imvolvment is down to a minimum. Very few parents volunteer and those that do have children leaving for highschool very soon. I have watched this school go downhill firsthand ever since the current principal came and warn anybody considering this school, to stay away.

My child has attended STM for 3 years now. We love the school and the staff. The education my child receives is great. The staff truly cares for the students, they make a point to remember kids names & say personal hellos to them. My only recent concern is that when we started at STM the class size was smaller than it is now....(our class has almost 30 kids)...I don't think the kids are falling through the cracks--but when you pay for that education I'd like to see a smaller class size.

The principle's leadership is non-existent. There are a handful of good teachers. There are hardly any extracurricular activities. The former ways of discipline have been relaced with the principle's beliefs in political correction. The overall quality is deplorable.

St. Thomas More is terrific. I have spent 15 great years involved with the school while watching my children grow into terrific young adults. My kids were challenged to perform academically. They were also taught to treat others with respect. The school overall is a loving and caring environment. The teachers are nurturing and great at their professions. The PTO is a hard working group of parents who are very supportive of the school. Over all, my family's time at STM has been a wonderful and worthwhile experience.

Very Good School. Very Good Curriculum, and strict in academics. Not easy in the beggining for kids with disciplinary problems, or low academic performance. Rules are set very clearly early in the year, and followed to the point the entire year. Students are encourage, and trained to work independently. A lot, without being excessive Homework and Extracurricular activities. Our kids had developed very good studying habits, and analytical thinking. Most of the teachers with at least 10-15 years of experience. Allows a lot of parent participation in multiple activities. Award winning band. Started a Strong Spanish Program this year. Computer Lab. is up to date, with recently purchased equipment. New Parish Priest and Vicar are highly involved in the school ( 180 degrees change from prior years..)

The St. Thomas More faculty is fully accredited. Every teacher accepts the responsibility to keep his/her professional credentials up to date. Unfortunately, there was a misstatement posted on this website that said the faculty is not qualified to teach. The diocese of Arlington does a full review of each of its schools every five years. We went through that process in the year 2004 and received a stellar review. St. Thomas More is a school that provides a Christian, loving environment, a strong curriculum, and a myriad of activities for the children. We are a Catholic school that has educated children for over fifty years. Our children have made us proud. As someone else has already stated on this website, just make an appointment and come by and see for yourself.

After reading the two reviews that were posted, I felt obligated to comment. I have had children at STM for the last 10 years. I currently have a child in an Arlington Diocesan High School taking honors courses -- the teachers at STM prepared my child well for these challenging courses. The STM teachers are competent, caring, and committed to provided a first class education to all students. The principal is an excellent leader who cares deeply for every student there. If you are considering STM, I would recommend taking a tour of the school anytime -- simply contact the STM school office and a tour will be provided for you and your child. Not to be too petty but I'm not sure how much credence should be paid to the previous reviewer(s) who apparently cannot spell or use correct grammar!

I would just like to say that STM is a great environment for learning. The principal wants to become more involved and has even started teaching. It is great how much she cares for the students as well as the parents. the parent-teachers are no different than the other teachers and the children love the school. We are so blessed to have Fr. Matthew, our resident pastor, so involved. he is funny and is a great example to the students. Great leadership is possessed by the principal and the teachers love to teach. I give two thumbs up.

I just want to confirm the same sentiments of the other reviews and that the principle is condescending. (Our child (pre-k) will not attend this school next year.

I would not recommend this school as long as the current principle is allowed to continue. She does not believe in the children and talks down to the children and parents alike. The teachers are not capable. It's a truly political climate with no one to report concerns. You have no choice, except to accept things or leave. This is not a good environment, especially for children trying to build self esteem.

I would not recommend this school. STM used to be a school of values and competition, but these have been replaced by politicall correct beliefs imposed by the principle. When a new administration comes I will be the first to recommend it.
